About me: My name is Jenny Heishman, and I have lived in Iowa since I was born. I was raised on the family farm where I became fond of all animals. I even spent time dressing animals in doll clothes and pushing them around in a stroller. As a teenager I moved from the farm into town.

When did I know I wanted a future in dogs: A day stands out in my mind, my 5th grade teacher had her dogs show friends come and give a presentation with approximately 40 dogs. In the line up was 2 Samoyeds and 1 Siberian Husky, I fell in love with both breeds. When I went home I announced to my family that I wanted a dog. I was told firmly that I could not get a dog until I grew up and could afford to buy and care for it myself. I was not happy, but I could not get them to change their mind.

Activities I do with my dogs: We have a daycare in my home and this makes for wonderful socialization for my dogs. Being at home allows me to spend a lot of time with my dogs. I also work with developmentally handicap people. The companies goal is to teach them independent living skills, so that someday they can live on their own. Bringing my dogs to visit at the home has been very rewarding for me and the dogs. I try to do as much therapy work with the dogs as I can. At this time I do not have any certified Therapy Dogs, but maybe someday I will put a dog through the test. In the meantime my dogs make very special people happy.
I spend most of my time training for AKC conformation dog shows. I travel at least two weekends a month to show my dogs.
Breeding is done on a limited basis. I breed only when I'm looking to add something to my own kennel. Sometimes I do have puppies or young adults available.

My Goals: When I started Heishman Kennel there was many things I did not know. I have made my fair share of mistakes. Everyday has been a learning experience, and I have many goals. I truly believe that in order to love both breeds you need to accept everything about them. The different types, personality, colors and antics. Because each can be valuable to you and your kennel/future.
I want to develop a line that I can call my own. I have respect for people that have been in the breed longer than I have been alive. Breeders with the courage to follow their hearts, and breed to the standard, having bred some really great dogs. I hope to be able to accomplish the same one day.
I will only do business with people that are open and honest about health or structure issues within their own lines.
My biggest goal is to show and produce healthy dogs, with sound structure and movement, dogs that have been bred to the standard, but also have great temperaments. I would like to show and finish as many good quality dogs as I can.

I do the following health checks: Eyes, Hips, Thyroid and Heart.

1) Eyes are checked yearly by a licensed ophthalmologist. I keep the CERF forms for my own personal records.

I'm willing to share copies of the CERF forms with people I do business with.

2) Hips are x-rayed by my vet and sent into OFA.

ON DOGS I PLAN TO USE IN MY BREEDING PROGRAM

I only breed dogs with a rating of good or excellent.

I HAVE DONE PRELIMS IN THE PAST ON SOME DOGS AND HAVE JUST KEPT THE INFORMATION FOR MYSELF. IN MOST CASES IT WAS NOT SENT IN BECAUSE I HAD NO PLANS TO USE THAT DOG FOR BREEDING.(although some dogs have there own ideas about what they think they want!!!! )

I USUALLY WAIT TO DO THE HIP X-RAYS UNTIL I HAVE A BREEDING PLANNED.BUT IN SOME CASES THERE MAY BE A CONTRACT THAT REQUIRES IT BE DONE BY A CERTAIN AGE.IN THAT CASE THE X-RAY IS DONE TO FOLLOW THE CONTRACT.

3) I have done thyroid checks on a few of my dogs. A new study is being conducted, and I hope that once the info has been compiled breeders can start an accurate thyroid registry.

4) I do OFA heart checks. I want to make sure that each of my dogs are healthy.

I HOPE THAT BY DOING THESE 4 HEALTH CHECKS ON MY DOGS THAT HEISHMAN KENNEL HAS A VERY STRONG HEALTHY FUTURE.
